Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a Fact for Veterans

Now a Post Battlefield Epidemic

After soldiers return state side after more than a decade of wars, and stand down from 24/7 battlefield readiness, many veteran are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as a result of their battlefield experiences. The number one symptom of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is “re-experiencing vividly the images, sounds and emotions” that mentally replays of combat on the battlefield long after leaving. Understand that Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is a normal defensive response to experiencing an overwhelming traumatic that cannot be processed or integrated into long-term storage then because military mission comes first. Traumatic life events push human systems to their highest coping and stress threshold.

Military personnel are highly trained professionals and when in battle mode their brain responds and functions differently. In the heat of battle a soldier’s brain is so focused on completion of a mission that there is no time to process the physical and emotional impact or achieve closure. Although it is a normal process for the brain to seek closure, for the soldier closure is not possible in the heat of battle. The brain instantly and defensively puts the mental and emotional recording of the combat aside for future processing, closure and storage.

A fact is a fact. So let’s look at the facts. Memory is a fact. War is a fact. Unfortunately for many veterans the latter two facts collide once they return home. The result of this collision is PTSD and its symptoms, which is normal. Therefore a legacy war for veterans is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is shameful that the all Branches Military in America does not recognize PTSD as strength but rather a weakness that is placed on a veteran. Not wanting to be viewed as weak, veterans suffer in the shadows of the society they protected and in silence.

Another fact is a soldier can leave the battlefield, but the battlefield never leaves the soldier.

Long after the soldiers are off the battlefield or not until they gain veterans status stateside, the unclosed combat memory surfaces with intensity, vividness, and in pieces or fragments termed battlefield flashbacks. These flashbacks can be experienced on a visual (mental), body (body memory) or organ (phantom pain) level. These flashbacks are felt as real and happening in real time in their head. The traumatic flashback can re-traumatize and trigger emotions of anger, fear, shame, guilt, rage and resentment. Behaviorally the experiencing veteran sometimes act out and response inappropriately events.

Veterans have been left in the darkness of our society and without relief.
