How Do I Know If I Have Low Self-Esteem?

WHAT IS SELF ESTEEM?
Self Esteem is an elusive concept. Self esteem is considered one of the major elements of emotional health; self-esteem encompasses both self-confidence and self-acceptance. Self esteem is a strong inner conviction of his or her competency and worth as a human being. Self-esteem is the way a person thinks and feels about themselves and how well they perform daily in life events. Basically it is a personal perception of on’s competency, dignity, and value that one attributes to oneself along with feeling good about self (for example, "I am competent" or "I am worthy"). Self esteem is the background and shades all of a person’s thoughts, feelings and actions. So in summary, self esteem is a person’s overall evaluation or appraisal, not judgment of his or her own worth, competency, dignity and value.

SO HOW DO I GAIN SELF-ESTEEM?

Here some steps that will help you to increase your self esteem.

Step 1: Stop negative thought patterns. Many people with low self esteem constantly have negative self talk. Self talk is the ongoing conversation one has with self. To change negative self talk, first you need to recognize the negative self talk. Make a list of all the negative self you engage in.

Step2: Make a list of new “positive life statements”. Make a list of positive statements you would like to say to yourself. You should develop at least a list of 20 to start. Then commit to say these 20 positive life statements 5 times a day out loud to yourself. This repetitive rehearsal will teach your brain a new pattern and help you to gain self esteem.

Step 3: Stop repeating negative self talk on other people. Every time you hear yourself saying something negative about yourself to other people…STOP IT. Correct by saying something positive when you recognize it. Do not get caught up in making negative statements about other people either.

Step4: Demonstrate positive self talk by example. Show other people that you positive in your behavior. Eventually other people will change their negative statements and behavior around you if you are positive.
These 4 steps will help you begin to create a new self esteem foundation. In this section there are exercises that will help you increase your self esteem and help your life to be more positive.
